Uffz Josef Stiglmayer 9/JG-3

This pilot had one known victory, his first, a Spitfire at Le Treport-Aumale on 7th June 1940.

Can anyone provide any further information about him, either before or after? I believe the record of this kill and/or further information is located on 'Film C. 2036/II Nr.65566/41'. I am new to this area of research and do not understand what this reference refers to and where I might find a copy. Perhaps someone can help.

I would also very much like to see a photo of Josef Stiglmayer.

It has been suggested that the author/researcher Dr Jochen Prien might be able to help but I have been unsuccessful trying to get a response from him on a related matter. Can anyone confirm the best way and/or his email address to contact him about this enquiry?

No mention in any of Jochen's books for Battle of Britain or Barbarossa. Not named on the German War Graves site. The reference is a list of kills for the Luftwaffe on microfilm and that is all it contains for your man. Combat reports do not exists in most cases. Jochen does frequent this site and if he can help, I am sure he will reply but it looks very much like your man was a 'one kill wonder'. I could be wrong though!

Is this the same Uffz Josef Stiglmaier who flew with 14./JG77 in the early days of the Eastern War? Apparently there is some confusion over the spelling of his name.

I personally have no idea whether Stiglmayer and Stiglmaier were one and the same pilots. I suppose this could be so as perhaps Stiglmayer would have been on the War Graves site if he had met his demise....if he seems to have disappeared in some other way and then Stiglmaier then appears, I suppose they could be one and the same.

Do I take it Chris that you have access to that microfilm page? If so, I would very much appreciate a copy if at all possible. Please advise.

If Dr Prien does read this post, then I would very much appreciate any knowledge he has on this particular pilot!! (The Stiglmayer flying at the time of the Battle of France).

I can't find that name in any of my uncle's files from when he was CO of the aforementioned unit.

Thank you VtwinVince (sorry if this is a duplicated reply, but my first attempt to respond just seemed to disappear when I completed it!). Being a new member I would be grateful if you could expand on what you wrote. Who was your uncle and between when and when was he the CO? Do you think there is anything significant in the fact that Stiglmayer's name does not appear in your uncle's files? In other words does he generally list all his pilots names or just mention some in passing? Finally, do his notes say anything about 7th June 1940 in particular? Hi guys

Further to my comment, I have a note that Uffz Josef Stiglmaier of 14./JG77 had previously served with 9./JG3. He was killed in action on 17 September 1941 in action with Hurricanes from 151 Wing.

Must be the same guy!

It would appear that the combat on 7 June 1940 was against Hurricanes of 43 Squadron rather than Spitfires.

I had been wondering myself whether his 'Kill' on 7th June 1940 might have been a mis-identification of a Hurricane for a Spitfire.

Stiglmair is the correct name.
