Major Theodor Quandt Stab/JG3

Hi

I just read an article about Theodor Quandt.A WW1 "ace" with 15 victories (all verified),on the 6th june 1940,he was shot down (42 years old !)and killed (Envermeu 15 km east of Dieppe) by Hurricanes.

Who could have been his winner?

michel

best regards

Re: Major Theodor Quandt Stab/JG3

Thanks Chris

Effectively,I searched bit it's confusing now!
According to P.Cornwell he was brought by french ( GC I/4).....it's not so on.
The other possibility is by Sq 17 or 111.... I think, but I don't have the time(a.m or p.m ?)

My question remains open

Re: Major Theodor Quandt Stab/JG3

It depends is Stab was flying with the rest of the Geschwader as I Gruppe made claims (no times), II Gruppe made claims (3 of which are timed at 1110 hrs and then 2105 hrs as did III Gruppe (1115, 1610 & 1612 hrs). 17 Sqn's claims were 0915 hrs and 111 Sqn 0640 hrs which do not match

Re: Major Theodor Quandt Stab/JG3

Michel,

You may well be correct regarding my potential error regarding the death of QUANDT as published in BoFrT&N ten years ago. Additional information obtained after publication confirms that his aircraft crashed and burned out in a meadow belonging to Mr Francois GUYANT of Douvrend situated at ‘Saint-Laurent’, on the slopes of Auberville, outside Envermeu, at around 11.15 a.m. on 6 June 1940. His carbonised remains were buried in situ but exhumed on 7 June 1941 and reinterred in Champigny-St-André.

According to an old listing of French fighter claims that I have on file, GC I/4 claimed five Bf109s plus three more probables in combat between Ferrières and Picquiny, immediately north & west of Amiens, at unrecorded times on this date. So while my original conclusion does not seem unreasonable I concede that the source material could be mistaken - particularly as I do not find the combat recorded by Arnaud GILLET in VCF 3 ? Alternatively, and as you say, Hurricanes of No.17 & No.111 Squadrons operating together from Hawkinge provided escort for No.40 Squadron Blenheims to Abbeville that morning and were engaged by Bf109s from around 09.50 a.m. German claims suggesting that these were elements of 5.JG3 and 3.(J)/LG2. So, while I do not have a definitive answer to your question, maybe this additional information may help you reach some conclusion. Finally, I would add three Bf109s claimed destroyed by Hurricanes of No.43 Squadron over Le Tréport around 11.00 a.m. to the mix.

Peter

I have the 43 Sqn claims 1110 hrs the following day (Foreman and Aces High agree on this)?

Quite so - my (further) error. All on the turn of a page.

Re: Major Theodor Quandt Stab/JG3

Hello

Using your good information,he is what I have deduce.
First of all:
1) I eliminate the french ( places and time that do not match):claims and losses of germans:Amiens and Soissons, too far away of Envermeu.
Stay the R.A.F
2) Relative to the place of the crash, the time (11h15 continental hour?) and the claim of Sq.17 (9h15 english time?),there is a certain agreement.

Therefore,Theodor Quandt would have the victim of the Sq.17,more particularly of Flt Lt Toyne (I'm not sure about that name) who claims a Bf.109 'Abbeville' just 40 km from Envermeu.

Re: Major Theodor Quandt Stab/JG3

There would have been one not two hours difference in the times if I am not much mistaken so this is still not conclusive
