Re: Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde

Hi Franck,

The village of Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde is a smal village to the south of Dendermonde. There is AFAIK no airfield or airstrip in that area.

From Peter Cornwell's BOF-T&N (page 180): Peter states that L9246 returned to base May, 10th which at that time was Rosières-en-Santerre.
On page 345 Peter writes that this a/c was later damaged during langing at Rouen, May 22nd. The a/c was repairable but was later abandoned. So the photos of L9246 with the Bf 109 are probably taken At Rouen.

Re: Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde

Thank you Rudi.
Poix should have been better
No solution for me ... It's obviously not a I./JG21 machine.

Franck.

Re: Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde

Hello,
Interesting article down there:
https://57squadron.wordpress.com/ble...hdwU0_R_xydYBU

Now we got Vitry-en-Artois ! Funny.

What is more funny being that only Poix - original Sqdn air base - is possible as suggested by Chris Goss.
That's the only place combining later Bf 109 unit, forest protection.
- Sint Gillis is out as explained above by Rudi.
- Rouen? I./JG21 ? But I don't see any JG21 machine with such markings.
- Vitry ? No forest ...

Left Poix. But it's just my opinion. In that case The Bf109 should be a JG54 machine.

Regards,
Franck.

Re: Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde

Warner in his book on the Blenheim says damaged on 10 May 40, RTB but abandoned when Sqn withdrew..... Maybe a look at the F540 might help? It looks as if they did not moved from Rosieres en Santerre to Poix for another week, then the day after to Crecy and the day after that back to UK
