Thanks, Nick. Didn't know and never thought to look! In fact, I didn't know the Seekriegsleitung KTB had been digitized and made available on the internet. In the past, I always used this one, which is both on the internet and in print form:

Glad to have been of help. It took me a while to find that appendix, too. Until then I'd got about as far as D = Dampfer (steamer) but some of the abbreviations for mines etc. totally defeated me.

Nick - I do have access to the Naval War Diary website - but failed to check!

richdlc - I do have a copy of Francis' book - I purchased directly from him a few years ago - but was unaware of the relevant chapter! Now rectified.

Still a few odds and ends to sort out, but getting there.

it was not MS 23 (or a motor vessel) but - look at igorrB post above - NS 23.

NS 23 / ELCH was a vessel of the B-Gruppe of the Hafenschutzflottille Norwegen Stavanger.

Then NS 23 = Netzschlepper 23? An auxiliary vessel used to furl and unfurl submarine nets, strings of buoys, etc., across a harbor or fjord?

Hafenschutzflottillen had a abbrivation for the area, they were used:

Their roles were harbour defence duties, picket service, escort of coastal convoys etc.

b) The netleyers you mean were named NT (https://www.wlb-stuttgart.de/seekrieg/km/netz.htm).

c) There were few mine destruction vessels (Sperrbrecher) with NS as name, but they served further south in the Channel area (https://www.wlb-stuttgart.de/seekrieg/km/spbr1-8.htm)
