St Kap 2./NJG 2 1940-41

It is recognized that Hptm Rolf Jung was St Kap of 2./NJG 2 (formerly 5./NJG 1) but Larry and Doug's list state that Oblt Hans-Georg Schütze was also St Kap but taking over 4./NJG 2 at the end of Jun 41. Can anyone tell me which is correct?

Re: St Kap 2./NJG 2 1940-41

I do not have any primary sources but I had 4/NJG2 as part of I/NJG2 until II/NJG2 was formed in November 1941 and Schütze being StKap from 27.06.41 in 4/I/NJG2 and still being there when it joined II/NJG2

Being part of I/NJG2 may have caused the confusion, particularly telling the difference between 1 and I

Regards

Martin

Martin: Thank for this. As you say 4./NJG 2 (formed from 1./ZG 2) did not become part of II./NJG 2 until formed under the leadership of Helmut Lent in Nov 41 but Schütze was a pilot with 2./NJG 2 prior to this not shooting down his first aircrfat until July 1941 with 4 Staffel. He was killed in May 1942 still St Kap of 4./NJG 2

Chris/Martin

This topic has been up before.
Meyer/Stipdonk list i their Vol 2 only Oblt Rolf Jung as St Kap 2./NJG 2 between 1.10.40 - 1.11.1941
I have added by pencil Oblt Hans-Georg Schütze between 1.10.40 - 26.6.41 indicating a possibility that Jung did not become St Kap until 26 or 27.6.41.

I don't believe any final conclusion was ever made then, but I am not 100% sure. Sorry.

Cheers
Stig

Re: St Kap 2./NJG 2 1940-41

Thanks Stig. I have Jung as a Hptm and getting his first victory with 2 Staffel 11 Feb 41; I would find it hard that an experienced pilot with the rank of Hptm flew underneath an Oblt who did not get his first victories until 19 Jul 41 by that time with 4 Staffel

Well Chris

I am only quoting Meyer/Stipdonk's book.
A list sent to me by Johannes listing all pilots making claims which he has managed to find
mentions no Rolf Jung. How many claims did he make and what happened to him?

Cheers
Stig

Re: St Kap 2./NJG 2 1940-41

Hello, Heinrich Hagmaier flew with Oblt. Schütze from flight 99 on 21 April 1941 to flight 181 on 13 September 1941 and his logbook is clearly signed by Schütze Oblt u. Staffelkapitän.

Schütze is given as Staffelkapitän for 4./NJG 2 from 27 June 1941 in Meyer Stipdonk - and there is a change in aircraft registrations in the Hagmaier logbook from May 1941 when they switch from 2 STaffel aircraft with staffel letter "K" to I./Stab aircraft with "B" before starting to flyg "M" staffel aircraft of 4./NJG 2 from 7 July 1941. So it appears that the transfer from 2./NJG 2 could have taken place already in May - at least judging by aircraft letters.

Re: St Kap 2./NJG 2 1940-41

Interesting points Mikael

How detailed information do we have with regard to these two individuals and the unit in question?
If one was the deputy of the other would that shine through anywhere?

Logbooks are always interesting I suppose, but there can be many reasons for these changes.
A Stab aircraft on loan perhaps and/or was Schütze allowed to take his own aircraft with him when he
transferred to his new unit? If he did, new markings most likely lagged behind a bit, and so on.

Cheers
Stig
