Request Info on U.S. WWII Ftr Pilot
Has anyone here ever heard of a WWI ETO (or MTO) fighter pilot who allegedly ended the war with "a substantial score" by the name of LONG, Eldon? The first name could be Elden of even something else. Said to have been shot down and spent the last part of the war in a German POW camp. His family roots were in Iowa, and he is said to have worked postwar for the Case IH tractor Co. and developed several farm tractors or front-end-loaders while there.
Any help would be appreciated. L. deZ. |

Re: Request Info on U.S. WWII Ftr Pilot
Found a 1Lt. Elton B. Long, 508th FS/404th FG. Only 1 claim though, for a Me 109 damaged on 17 Dec. 1944, time 1120-1230 hours, location F-4040, Bonn area.
Source: Frank J. Olynyk, USAAF (European Theater) Credits For the Destruction of Enemy Aircraft in Air-to-Air Combat World War 2. According to the p47pilots.com website 1Lt. Elton B. Long was born 6 June 1921 in Springfield, IL. Nothing in the short bio to suggest he was a POW but the postwar stuff mentioned leads me to think it's the guy you're seeking. http://p47pilots.com/P47-Pilots.cfm?...on%20B.%20Long |

Gangbusters, gentlemen, positively gangbusters! You really came up with the goods and I am most appreciative.
Elton Blackburn LONG it is. His postwar claim of "a substantial score" threw me off the track and I didn't look beyond the usual list of Aces. I have the William WOLF book that details P-47 units and operations, American Fighter-Bombers in World War II: USAF Jabos in the MTO and ETO. Schiffer, 2003, but it is poorly indexed. Thanks again for your outstanding assistance with this! L. deZ. |
