Loss of Gruppenkommandeur Peter Kogl 1940

Hi,

I have been trying to find out about Kommandeur Peter Kogl who was killed in action on 14th June 1940. I believe he was a Gruppenkommandeur of a Stuka group possibly IV (St) / LG1. I have been fortunate to obtain his death card that explains he was killed during an attack o the Maginot Line but does not say whether he was killed during an air attack or during the push to this area. I was hoping someone could fill in some of the blanks.

With thanks

Rick

Re: Loss of Gruppenkommandeur Peter Kogl 1940

Hello Rick! Sorry about my horrific english...

Hptm. Peter Kögl was the commander of the Stuka-Gruppe IV.(St.)/LG 1 since November 1937.
On 14-06-1940 the group attacks the fortresses Püttlingen and Valette, parts of the Maginot-Line in the south of Saarbrücken. Time of this mission was 0857 to 1030.
After hit by artillery his Ju 87B crashed near Cappel, damaged 80%.
Hptm Kögl and his crewman Ofw. Ernst Stichel were killed.
Peter Kögl was born 17-01-1908 in Hagen, Stichel 6-8-1914 in Küstrin.

Greetings, Joerg.

Hi Joerg,

Thank you for the information - I wish my German was half as good as your English! I am amazed by the detail you provided - can I ask where you found your information?
Best regards
Rick

Hi Rick!
You can read this details in the fantastic chronicle of the LG 1, originally titled as "Die Geschichte des Lehrgeschwaders 1" by Peter Taghon (VDM-Verlag Heinz Nickel, 2004) - one of the best Geschwader-chronicles I´ve ever seen.

joerg.
