18/05/1940 Do17 shot down by French WWI veteran
Hi !
A few days ago I purchased the excellent Avions Hors serie nr.20 - Les As Français de 1939-1940, première partie: d'Accart à Lefol by C.Cony and Alain Coste (publisher Lela Presse) On page 8 and 9 they give in great detail data about Commandant Marc Ambrogi. This pilot born on June 8, 1896 shot down (together with Lt Bouysse and S/C Corrin) a Do17P on 18/05/1940. This pilot scored his first victory 23 years earlier (in 1917). Who can supply me details about this Do17P and his crew ? (On page 9 of the above mentioned publication a photograph of the Luftwaffe plane is published.) Many thanks and best regards Luc |

Hi Luc,
it was probably Do 17P from the 2(F)/14 - crew: Lt.Alexander Schreiner (FF) KIA, Fw.Hans Eggers (BO) KIA and Fw. Otto Seefeldt (BF) KIA. Source: Les Victories de l`Aviation ... Part 2. Regards Robert |

Hi Robert !
Many thanks for your prompt reply. Checked the Volksbund website and the 3 crewmembers you mentioned are buried at the German War Grave Cemetery at Lommel. They mention as first name for fw Seefeldt Wilhelm. Best regards Luc |

Re: 18/05/1940 Do17 shot down by French WWI veteran
Luc,
Robert is right to say the Do17 mentioned was only 'probably' shot down by Lt Bouysse, Cdt Ambrogi, and S/C Corrin of GC I/8. Engaged east of Le Cateau and pursued to south of Cambrai only to come down at Montigny-le-Tilleul (south-west of Charleroi) doesn't seem too likely. |

18/05/1940 Do17 shot down by French WWI veteran
Hi Peter,
The distance between Cambrai and Montigny-le-Tilleul is approx. 100 km approx 60 m). The unit is mentioned as 2(F)/14. Is this correct or was it 2(H)/14 ? Best regards from sunny Belgium Luc |
