FW units over Vienna on August 28 1944

Guys:

Am currently reading Bob Goebel's War Bio, "Mustang Ace" & this gave rise to a question: On August 28, 1944, on a mission to Vienna he was dogfighting an expertly flown ME 109 when he was bounced by what he said where a couple of FW190s who chased him all over Southern Austria, before he finally pulled away from them using Emergency power (for a LOT longer than is recommended by the way!); in a nutshell, I am totally unaware of any FW equipped fighter units operating in Southern Europe at this time, so I am curious if the identity of the unit these FWs belonged to---or IF in fact they were EVEN FWs...

Thanks, ahead of time

NickM

Re: FW units over Vienna on August 28 1944

At least two Focke-Wulf 190 equipped units flew combat missions in the Vienna area on 28 August 1944: IV.(Sturm)/JG 3 and II.(Sturm)/JG 300 which both took off from Jüterbog at 9:48 with 16 and 10 Focke-Wulfs respectively. In addition, at least one Fw 190 of Stab/JG 300 took off at about the same time from Jüterbog and saw combat shortly before 11:55 near the airfield of Wien-Aspern.

More details in the following books:

a) Jagdgeschwader 300, A Chronicle of a Fighter Geschwader in the Battle for Germany, Volume 1, by Jean-Yves Lorant & Richard Goyat, Eagle Editions (2005), pages 306-307.

b) IV./Jagdgeschwader 3, Chronik des Einsatzes einer Jagdgruppe, by Jochen Prien (1996), page 223.

I haven't read that far in "JG 300" yet but by Google Earth Jüterbog - Wien is a 500 km/300 mile flight just to get into the action. I'm impressed.
