Question about Hptm. Ernst Ott, Stab I./ZG1 in 1940
Hello,
Does anyone know anything about Hptm. Ernst Ott, who is noted scoring a victory against a British Fighter on 1.6.40, while on the Stab of I./ZG 1. What Stab position did he hold? Where did he come from prior to that time and where did he go when the unit was reorganized into a NJG unit? We pretty much know the composition of the Stab of I./ZG1 during the French Campaign, and I don't see where he fits in. Thanx for any help. |

Hi Larry,
I believe that Ernst Ott was Gr.Kdr. I./ZG 2 on the date in question. Best Regards Andy Fletcher

Re: Question about Hptm. Ernst Ott, Stab I./ZG1 in 1940
Hi Larry: I have a Hptm. Ernst Ott as Kdr. III/StGr-2, a JU-87 unit during the Polish campaign. Is it possible this is your man, transitioned to Zerstorer, and attached to Stab I/ZG-1 to gain experience prior to being assigned to ZG-2? Disregard if you already have this info. Also concerning II/ZG-1...They apparently were responsible for the massacre of possibly up to 7 or 8 Dutch DB-8A3N's of 3e Jachtvliegtuigenafdeling on 10.5.40.This may account for some reported claims by pilots such as Hermichen and kutscha. Cheers. Dean

Re: Question about Hptm. Ernst Ott, Stab I./ZG1 in 1940
Dean,
Thanks for this info. I note that Marius Emmerling and other sources also carry an Ott as Gr Kdr of III./StG 2 during the Polish Campaign. Good catch. Unless there were two Hptm. Ernst Ott's in the Luftwaffe at the time, your theory makes good sense. I'll look into the info on the massacre of the Dutch DB-8A3N's as well. Unfortunatly I've not been able to add to the details of who got what for II./ZG-1. Thanks |
