Re: Three color band on Storch

I read the backside inscription - Sütterlin - as follows:

"Unser Fieseler Storch
mit General Sommer"

"Our Fieseler Storch
with General Sommer"

the reading of the last two letters is doubtful - could be read as "Sommel" likewise - but definitely not as "Rommel"

Regards

Roland

Re: Three color band on Storch

Since the Stammkennzeichen starts with 'I', it was actually 'adapted' from the original civilian marking, i.e., D-IDK_

Re: Three color band on Storch

Quite sure it's Somm.. last letter seems quite different of the "l" above, maybe Sommk...

Quite seldom to have a Stkz beginning with "i" ..

Re: Three color band on Storch

I agree with Denes reasoning. I have a Fi 156 WL-IDKL in 1939. On 01. Jan 1939 it was ordered the all Kennzeichen change from the civilian D-XXXX to the military WL-XXXX for military aircraft. the WL- was later dropped and the code ID+KL remained. Since this particular aircraft was manufactured in 1939 this is indeed a plausible explanation.

Reagrds,

Norbert

Re: Three color band on Storch

Hello Norbert,

I encountered also such codes, just noted that they are quite unusual, maybe at the beginning of the changing period from WL-XXXX TO XX+XX

Rémi

Further many of these codes turned in fact to be 1.+.., as many IH+..

Hi,
Just to get this back on track and get an answer to the question, what are the stripes at the back of the engine cowling for?

Regards,

David

Re: Three color band on Storch

Gents,
I know about a photo of a Ju 88 C from KG 76 (only F1+... is visible) in Russia with an identical narrow band in white-yellow-red around the aft fuselage.

But I still have no idea about the meaning, maybe a marking for a Gruppen- or Staffelstab?

Regards,

Heuser

Re: Three color band on Storch

Hi All,
it is also of interest that the codes D-IAAA to D-IZZZ were reserved for experimental future military aircraft before the aknowledgement of the existance of the Luftwaffe.

Regards,

Norbert
