Nightfighter NJG 6 claim

Dear friends of this forum,

I'm new and would like to introduce myself first. I'm Rolf and do some research reg. crashed airplanes in the area where I presently living.

Based on info from Military Archive in Freiburg, Germany a German Nightfighter was shot down in the night 3./4. April 1945. The plane belonged to I./NJG 6.
I can not find any claim. WHo shot down this German Nightfighter?
Thanks in advance
Rolf

Re: Nightfighter NJG 6 claim

Hallo Peter,

thanks for the warm welcome. Met you in Speyer this year but just for a few minutes. Was a pleasure.
The aircraft/crash you mentioned is exactly the tight one. Here some details:
Date: 3./4. April 1945
Me 110 G-4; Pilot FW Vorwerk; I./NJG 6; shot down near Gablingen at 02:45am.

I can not find any claim, nor from a RAF pilot or unit. Does somebody know the pilot/unit who shot down FW Vorwerk?
Is it possible that the date is wrong even it's documented in the Dairy NJG 6???
Where is the grave of FW Vorwerk?
Thanks in advance
Rolf

239 Sqn claimed a Ju 188 that night but no Bf 110s

Re: Nightfighter NJG 6 claim

Looking at Martin Middlebrooks's Bomber Command War Diaries the night of 3/4th April 1945 is listed as minor operations.
95 Mosquito sent to Berlin, 8 to Plauen and 5 to Magdeburg with 17 Mosquito Nightfighter patrols.

Heavy RAF daylight raids looked to have taken place on the 3rd and 4th,
and a major night raid was flown on the 4/5th deep into Germany.

I was going to suggest and RAF Airgunner could have shot down the 110 without actually being aware he had scored enough or any vital hits, however if the above details of 3/4th night are accurate it would appear that no RAF gunners were over Germany that night.

Possible friendy fire or German Flak hit if the date is correct ?

Re: Nightfighter NJG 6 claim

Hello

There is a loss of a Ju88 G-6 (Wnr. 622056) of the I./NJG 4 near Hamm which is more in the flightline of the british Mosquito-units that night.
Therefore I am inclined to believe that the Bf110 loss is not the result of a hunting Mosquito.
I was wondering whether the ORB of 239 Sqd.RAF gives any clue about the claimlocation?

All the best, Marcel Hogenhuis / Venlo
