This was one of 6 Typhoons on an afternoon armed reconnaissance of the Wesel-Munster-Bocholt area. No movement (ie. transport) was seen and an RP & cannon attack was made on the railway yard at Xanten (which is in Germany, about 10km west of Wesel). McWhirter's Typhoon's engine started 'cutting out' and he was forced to land just short of the Allied lines; he was captured by German troops. 247 Squadron was part of 124 Wing and was based at B.78 Eindhoven at that time.
