Re: Whirlwinds victories
Hi all,
I have finished creation of a list of all (?) Whirlwind´s victories. See attached file. There is open question regarding several possible opponents which were claimed. I welcome if you check the list and advice your additions/comments. Further step for making a part of the article will be LW claims & Whirlwind losses. Regards, Michal Legend: Sestřel = Destroyed Pravděpodobný sestřel = Probably destroyed Poškození = Damaged ... na zemi = on the groung |

Re: Whirlwinds Squadron
Hi
I'm new to this site and saw posts about 263 Squadron. I hope one you can help me with my research. My father was a pilot with 16 Squadron and he mentions a Whirlwind Squadron in his log book. I am trying to trace the event. In his log book on 30th April 1943 he writes... Rhubarb W/C Davenport No 1 Guernsey -Dol -Rennes. ...Attacked two barges hits scored. more flak from escort. Landed Isbley to report to Whirlwind Squadron Their C/O sank ship. failed to return. I think the date is wrong as he had log book stolen and he had to rewrite it later.I think it should be the 29th April 43 as I understand a ship was hit on this day, and an aircraft was damaged but can't find out any further details. I know the C/O was not killed but I suspect that he must have return later than expected after my father flew off. I wonder if any of you can shed light on this and let me know the name of the C/O and what ship was sunk. Many thanks Sally-Anne. Last edited by motherbird; 5th February 2008 at 20:48. Re: Whirlwinds victories
Sally-Anne
The 16 Sqn diary seems to suggest that this operation was on 30 April 1943. On 30/4/43 the diary records that W/Cdr J R Davenport and F/Off D A Greville-Heygate flew a Rhubarb along the railway from Dol - Rennes - Lamballe. Two locomotives were damaged, one motor barge was damaged off Jersey. Light flak from position 2/3 miles West of Dol. Machine gun fire from largest ship of vessels attacked. There is no mention that 16 Sqn was operating with 263 Sqn but that does not mean that it did not happen. Perhaps someone else can help with the 263 Sqn part of the story Steve |

Re: Whirlwinds victories
Thanks for info.
Strange, Predannack is miles from Ibsley so I don't see how this this entry could mean 263 Squadron. I wonder if it was 137 squadron instead. Thanks again Sally-Anne |

137SQ squadron diary records no flying on this date, due to a low cloud base. maybe it was a different date ? cheers Jerry |
