Maybe SAAF Spitfire??

Hello friends, as ever i'm trying to identify some planes crashed in north italy during ww2.

This last crashed in an undefined date of 1944, the farmer who witnessed the crash said that the pilot baled out, and he buried all the remains of the plane to avoid troubles from the germans.

From the few pieces recovered is almost impossible identify the plane, but working on the Luftgaukommando files index i have found a place and a date that should be right:

"27 september 1944, time 12:00 place Tebano, 5 kms south Castel Bolognese"

Anyone can tell mee more about this Spit? Thanks in advance

Hi.
Lt S B Healy of 2 sqdn SAAF was lost while attacking an ammo dump and Barracks on western side of Bologna. He was flying south from Bologna with an overheated engine but did not reach base. He does not appear on out ROH so must have survived.

Re: Maybe SAAF Spitfire??

Mickey,

Lt S.B. Healey is mentioned on http://www.behindbarbedwire.org/safrican.htm#H so became POW.

If you meant MJ751 and your source was spitfires.ukf.net, then the loss date was 27-7-1944?

Check www.footnote.com and enter Tebano in the search item. There's a hit that leads you to a MACR. It looks like Tebano is mentioned with a Spitfire on 27-9-1944, but not being a member of this website, I can't read the fine print.
Perhaps another forum reader can help you here?

Regards,

Leendert
