Phil,

Lost on May 12, 1940, as follows:

Stab I./StG2 Junkers Ju87B (5136). Shot down by Hurricanes of No. 3 Squadron south-west of Hasselt and abandoned over Geetbets, north of Grazen, 8.30 a.m. Possibly one of those attacked by P/O F. R. Carey. Pilot believed baled out unhurt, (Bf) Uffz Heinrich Basler killed. Aircraft 100% write-off.
Major excavation by local enthusiasts 1990 recovered engine, propellor blades, section of fuselage, remains of undercarriage, cockpit canopy, armament, radio, maps, parachute, and scraps of uniform.

Philippe,

Unfortunately not, there are rarely any guarantees as to who got exactly what when researching actions of this kind and particularly at such a distance in time. Certainly, No. 3 Squadron were responsible but which individual pilot remains open to question. Hence my cautionary 'Possibly one of those ...' phrasing used in BoFrT&N. They filed claims for seven Ju87s destroyed, (plus two more unconfirmed), after this action when, as far as I am aware, only two Stukas were actually lost. It may well have been Stephens rather than Carey - who knows for sure ?

Re: stuka ju 87 werknummer 5136 info wanted

the 5136 was from I St G 2 immelman ,
I consisted of 3 staffels 1 ,2,3,
what i want to know if its correct (due to previous reactions on this board) that every staffel had 12 planes ?
if 5136 was from the 3rd staffel (found some yellow paint on area were insigna was painted of 3 rd staffel (scottish-terrier 'molch' dog of Major Hitschhold ) it would have the letter L in his code
T6+ ?L
my question yet is
1)am I correct until yet?
2)the ? does it or will it represent a number 1-12 or a letter A-Z ?
any help would be appreciated to solve the mystery

Hi
I can confirm that if as stated this was an aircraft of Stab.I./StG 2 then the last letter of the code should be B, so T6+_B. This would not explain the yellow found in the area of an insignia. The colour of the dog emblem referred to would be white. There are two possibilities.
  1. I have a feeling that the emblem attributed to Stab./StG 2 has been spotted on other a/c of the geschwader? The lower portion of this emblem has a yellow/gold wall and above the shield is a yellow/gold crown.
  2. The yellow could be the undercoat paint?
Photos of this area could help determine this.

The missing character must be a letter, but I do not have the records to suggest which letter. I believe that the pilot was Oberleutnant Dietrich Perkrun. Perhaps someone could fill in this one missing gap?

Ian

Hi Phil

I have had a look at your very interesting website here, and wish you well in this continuing restoration project. I also found out that Pekrun was adjutant in stab.I/StG 2 by the time of the crash. The colour of the emblem surrounding the Scotti dog which is evident on the photo that you have is then green. Logic would also suggest that the full code should then be T6+BB. …(assuming that he was flying the a/c of the adjutant of stab.I/StG 2 at this time).

Regards

Ian
