So Martti, by your standards e.g. Kari Stenman´s recent 6-volume study of FinnAF is worthless as it has neither footnoting nor bibliography? Or the highly respected Putnam series on British and US aircraft makers? Or the Spitfire-bible by Morgan&Shacklady?

Well, Stemans's series is more of photos and less concentrated on the text size but if I'm making scientific text on scientific magazine (Historiallinen Aikakauskirja for example) or for a book I would not use Stenman's text for reference since I can not verify the information.

I haven't read the Putnam series so I can not say anything of it.

I have read every issue of HAik since around 1990 (except perhaps the latest 1 or 2 issues) and I have seen lots of articles that refer to books that have no footnoting.

Historiallinen Aikakauskirja uses peer review so could you mention some of these articles? Peer review has it's problems too but it is still the best tool when reviewing articles.

Well, the magazines are in the library 100 km away and I don´t have access them to right now. And I did not read them taking notes so I could point to a specific page months after the fact.
