B-25 shot down 23/8/42 82nd BS

Hi guys

Just in case you missed this, I am enquiring about a B-25 from the 82nd BS/12th BG shot down over North Africa on the night of 23/24 August 1942. Monroe Schwartz was the pilot.

Serial number and details and fates of crew required, please. I can't seem to find anything on the web.

Cheers
Brian

Re: B-25 shot down 23/8/42 82nd BS

Hallo Brian,

The following details are from ROYAL AIR FORCE BOMBER LOSSES IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND MEDITERRANEAN, Vol. 1 by David Gunby and Pelham Temple.

22 August 1942, B-25C 41-12862, 82nd Bomb Sqn., 12th Bomb Group.

Lost returning from a mission to bomb a tank depot at Mersa Matruh. Take-off time from Deversoir not given. The IFF device failed and it was shot down in error by an RAF Beaufighter.

1/Lt. S.L. Powell,Jr.
2/Lt. M.J. Stolk
2/Lt. M.P. Swartz (sic)
2/Lt. A.W. Hatten
S/Sgt. J.L. Reed KIA
T/Sgt. W.P. Shannon KIA

Note the date and name spelling.

It appears the first four of the crew were all safe after the crash.
It appears that Swartz was either the Navigator or the Bombardier.

From another source I see a 1/Lt. John Stolk as Captain of his own B-25 in the 83rd BS in April 1943.

Hope this helps,

Martin Gleeson.
