In fact, this story is told in Steinhoff book, and is supposed to have been told by S Freytag himself. I don't know if the authors had another source.
I understood that JL Roba wrote an article in the french Forign Legion bulletin, telling this story... Mr Prien seems to have the most comprehensive data about those events, and he himself says that nothing is known for sure......
