Japanese pilots position during carrier launch

Heh Guys, I wonder if anyone can help with this. I've noticed in photos and film clips of Japanese aircraft (particularly zeros) launching from carriers that some pilots look to be almost standing in the cockpit. I expect it's to get a better view over the nose of the aircraft but does anybody know if they actually stood or just leaned out of the seat?
Many thanks for any help.
