Vertical Stabilizer Design (Fw-190/Ta Series)
The dorsal junction between the fuselage and vertical stabilizer in the Fw-190/Ta series was designed with a very wide radius of curvature. It almost looks like a saddle back there. Designated "27" and "A" in the drawings, this area is a unique and distinctive feature on the -190's. It had to make the tail extremely strong, but it was VERY un-aerodynamic, essentially an anchor that robbed the plane of speed and energy.
Why did Kurt Tank incorporate this design feature into the aircraft? Bronc Last edited by Broncazonk; 2nd December 2020 at 04:13. |
