Recommendations for Book on German Ace Hans-Joachim Marseille

Hello everyone,

I am seeking a recommendation for an English language book on the career of German ace Hans-Joachim Marseille. Do I need to buy the 2025 book (440 pages) just to be thorough? Or perhaps I should just rely upon my copies of Shores, Massimello, Guest, Olynyk & Bock's revised A History of the Mediterranean Air War? The list below is certainly not exhaustive. I expect that there are translations of German and French biographies out there.

Thanks in advance.

The Star of Africa: The Complete Story of Hans-Joachim Marseille as Told by Those Who Knew Him and Those He Fought

"Revised Expanded Unabridged edition"[!]
(Warriors Publishing Group 2025)
by Colin D. Heaton
440 pages - hardcover, paperback [POD]

The Star of Africa plunges you into the blistering cockpit of Hans-Joachim Marseille, the Luftwaffe's most dazzling maverick. Against the backdrop of North Africa's sun-scorched skies, Marseille carved his legend: 158 confirmed victories; a string of near-impossible dogfights won by instinct and raw courage; and the coveted Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds.

But Marseille's genius did not come at the cost of his conscience. Refusing to swallow the Nazi doctrine around him, he spun forbidden jazz through his radio, befriended a South African POW, and lived by an honor code that led him to guide crippled Allied fighters safely to the desert floor, sometimes risking anti-aircraft fire to slip them notices of their downed comrades. Through interviews with fellow pilots and German officers who watched him grow from undisciplined renegade to the "Star of Africa," Colin D. Heaton paints a vivid portrait of a man whose soaring heroism and tragic end - caused not by enemy fire but by mechanical fate - reshaped the morale of an entire fighter wing and left an indelible mark on aviation history."

The Author
"Colin D. Heaton earned BA and MA degrees in history as well as an MPhil degree in Europeans Studies, and he has taught history, academic writing, military history, and sociology in various universities. He has been interviewing military veterans, pilots in particular, for three decades. He has published 11 books in five languages and over 30 articles, many derived from his interviews. His articles have appeared in periodicals such as Military History, Aviation History, World War II, and Vietnam Magazine.

This 18-page article contains 24 photos, two colour maps, several tables, an appendix and many first-hand accounts from the men involved from both sides of the combat."

The Star of Africa: The Story of Hans Marseille, the Rogue Luftwaffe Ace Who Dominated the WWII Skies
(Zenith Press 2012)
by Colin D. Heaton and Anne-Marie Lewis
Forwards by Walter J. Boyne and Albert H. Wunsch III
240 pages - hardcover

"The Star of Africa is a biography of the dramatic life and meteoric career of German Luftwaffe Captain Hans-Joachim Marseille, the "Star of Africa.” Marseille, a legendary figure in the annals of military history, had 158 kills to his name and was one of the rare recipients of the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds, the Third Reich’s highest honor awarded for valor in combat. Unlike other German fighter aces, Marseille is also a famous figure in the public imagination in the United States and other English-speaking countries, where his rebellious nature, iconoclastic behavior, and early death have nourished his reputation just as greatly as his exceptional skill and chivalrous conduct as an adversary."
