II/KG53 He111H-3 (6843)
This a/c was shot down on the 15th September 1940 and crashed at Burgess Farm, Frittenden, Kent. Of the crew, Fw.Grassl was killed whilst the following baled out and were captured : Major Gruber, Oblt.Schirning, Uffz.Schilling, Oberfw.Schmittborn and Fw.Nagel. One of these survivors landed on the edge of the Sissinghurst Castle estate and made his way to a nearby cottage where the family looked after him until he was taken prisoner. I recently met a member of the family, who was 8 years old at the time and has asked me to try and identify the crew member concerned.
Can anybody help with this ? Graham Holmes |
