Reggiane 2000 for RAF!

In "Avions" No. 170 in an article about the Italian AF in the Battle of France

it is stated that 'end of January 1940 the RAF ordered 300 Reggiane 2000

but they could not be delivered once Italy sided with Germany in the war'.

Apart from seeming most unlikely does anybody know anything about this ?

I know we were pretty desperate! 300 Hawk 75's would have been logical

but not the Re. 2000.
