Info Needed on famous P-38 crash...
Hey guys...
I recently picked up some reconnaissance P-38 Lightning crash parts from a wreck that has some history in Germany. It was shot down by a German aircraft (presumably from an me109) around April 1945 near NEUKIRCHEN Autobahn München-Salzburg. There is still a crater there from the impact, and a prop and engine are in a private collection. Apparently, the pilot bailed out around 10 meters (jumped into a field), and broke some bones. He then fled to a farmhouse, where he healed until the allies advanced into that area. He survived the war and also visited the wrecksite many years ago. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
