Mustangs using "chaff" ?

In "Mustangs and Unicorns - A History of the 359th FG" by Jack H. Smith, you can read in the 28 December 1944 entry :

"At the I.P., approching the target, sixteen P-51s of the 368th FS pull ahead of the bombers and drop chaff to blind the enemy radar"

Can someone confirm Mustangs (or other fighters) were used to drop chaff, if so how were they carried ?

Regards

Alfred
