RAF or SAAF escorting Spitfires...?
On July 7, 1944, twelve Marauders of 24 Sqn SAAF bombed Imola (Italy) and they were escorted by eight Spitfires, according to their mission report.
Only that the report doesn't specify whose unit the Spits belonged to and, since those very Spitfires apparently clashed against at least a pair of Italian-flown Bf 109s, shooting one down with the death of Serg. Renato Saletti, I am quite interested to identify such unit. I have checked the diaries of SAAF Spitfire units, but - so far - none of them was apparently involved in such mission. Has anyone else any clue to shed a little of light on this matter...? Thanks in advance
