Spitfire canopy question

The late Bob Jones (miss him) once told me that the change in the early Mk 1 from a "flat" top main canopy to the bulged, higher, but not side bulged canopy during production was to accommodate the taller people coming out of university in the late 1930s. Any truth to this?
