Was XXII TAC part of Twelfth Air Force?
After the invasion of the southern France (Operation Dragoon, August 15th 1944), the forces of 12th AF were split to support both fronts, in southern France and northern Italy. Please correct me if I'm wrong:
Apparently the fighter-bombers (which units?) of XII TAC stayed in France to form the 1st TAF together with the French Air Corps, while in Italy a new Tactical Air command, XXII TAC, was formed (again, which units formed it?). Was XXII TAC still a part of 12th AF? I'm especially interested in Thunderbolt outfits - how were their forces split? I know that, for example, 79th FG returned from France to Italy in October 1944 and until the VE-Day was subordinated to the British Desert Air Force. Thank you in advance |
