1 FG P38 2/10/1942 Lt.Young
Hi !
On October 2,1942 37 P38's of 1 FG (Circus 221) were escorting B17 (with the Avions Potez factory near Amiens as target). Lt Young left the formation at approx 15 hours (cause = ? ,technical problems = ?) and was shot down by Uffz Hans-Joachim Stoller of JG26 at 16h25.Stoller himself was shot down the same day by a Spitfire (Source: JG26 War Diary - D.Caldwell) According to ' Allied Combats and casualties ' of Tony Wood (which is available on his website) the pilot bailed out. He got killed and is presently buried in the USA. A confiscated German document at Nara gives that the plane crashed 3 km w.of Coquelles,France. Who has more details about the final flight of Lt.Young ? It is possible that the serial of the plane was 41-75.. Many thanks and best regards from tropical Belgium Luc
