Lt. Keith Quilter, DSC, FAA fighter pilot
Posted on Facebook by:
Will Iredale @WIredale · 20h Very sad news. Keith Quilter has died, aged 99. He was one of the last Royal Navy fighter pilots from the war, whose story inspired me to write The Kamikaze Hunters. More importantly, he was a top bloke. Enjoy the party up there, old friend. We shall all miss you so much x 1/2 https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/80030712 Lieutenant KEITH QUILTER DSC RN - helping form 1842 Sqn in 1944 he served on board HMS Formidable equipped with Corsairs and attacked the Tirpitz three times; twice on strafing missions and a third dive-bomb attack. Sailing to the Far East with the British Pacific Fleet to support US Navy operations, he flew at Okinawa and was involved in sweeps and ground attacks on Japanese airfields on neighbouring islands. Whilst in the Pacific he was shot down attacking a Destroyer but rescued by a US submarine.
