173 Sqdn / Middle East Communications Squadron
16 Oct 1945, the Danish F/O Børge Nielsen is killed. Information from Colin Cummings book "The Price for Peace" (via Henk Welting, RAF Commands Board) indicates, that
"16-Oct-45 - LP803 - Wellington X - MECS - crashed Capodichino. The aircraft's port engine failed because of a problem within one of its cylinders. The pilot overshot an emergency landing but the aircraft then entered a flat turn during which it stalled and dived into the ground." Among the casualties were F/O Børge Nielsen, DFC. In the NA (website), I can locate 2 ORB records for this unit AIR 27/2890 covering the period from 1956-61 AIR 27/3135 covering the period from 1961-65 Would anyone have and idea about the ORB entry covering this particular day? Thought it might be in the 173 Sqdn ORB, but the NA database indicated that this is not continued, when the squadron becomes MESC. Mikkel |
