Placement of Eastern Front ID "yellow V" on Bf 109?

AFAIK, the "V" was to consist of 15cm wide bands forming a 45 degree angle, with the point on the lower surface, opening in the direction of flight and overlap the leading edge by 60cm. But where on the (left) wing was it to be placed on Bf109s? Were there instructions for placement or was it a free for all?
