Air battle over Portland
On the 11th July 1940 two Bf110C, having been shot down, crashed into the clifftop at Portland. One was piloted by Oberlt Hans - Joachim Goering, the other by Lt Friedrich-Wolfgang Graf zu Castell.
It is possible that the crash site of one of these aircraft, can be identified from a photograph taken at the time and also by local information it can be confirmed that a Bf110 came screaming out of the sky and crashed in the area of the crash site. The site has a maximum depth of earth say 1 - 2 feet (30-60 cm) at most. From this it can be assumed that neither pilot's or rear gunner's of either of these aircraft survived, can this be confirmed.
