I fully agree with you on the interpretation problems of colours from b/w photos
Myself I personally go for the yellow undersides, as a 266Sq pilot shot down a yellow undersided 520 in early/mid 44, and quoted the colours in his combat report.
Also many websites & books go for yellow on captured a/c..
