Werner Mölders on 8.9.1939

Hello,
could somebody explain me how the story was created that on 8.9.1939 Mölders (1./JG 53) was shot up by a French fighter ? Chr. Shores wrote about this, but I mean he made a "big mistake" here (as many others).
