" Italian weather report "

Gentlemen,

in order to correctly allocate a number of photos of III./JG 53 I need to know some details of the weather conditions in Northern Italy between early December 1943 and the end of January 1944, especially the areas around Reggio nell' Emilia and around Udine.

From a number of original sources I understand that on Decmber 3rd heavy snow falls started which hampered all aerial activities of III./JG 53 from Reggio nell' Emilia until well into the month. Snow falls also prevented the transfer of the flying echelons of the Gruppe from Reggio and Parma to Villaorba originally planned for December 19th which could only be carried out on December 24th.

This would lead to the assumption that the landscape around Reggio must have been covered with snow - and thus appear white on photo - for the whole period starting on December 3rd. It would also suggest that with the continuing snow falls the landscape would have been white well into January 1944.

My questions therefore are:

Is it correct, that the North of Italy, in particular the areas around Reggio and around Udine, were covered with snow throughout this period ?

And if so, until when did the snow last ?

I would be very happy if someone out there would be able to answer these questions.

Regards

Jochen Prien
