153 Sqdn. Beaufighter NF at Reghaia 43-44
I am interested in any information on the above.
My brother Tony (F/O A M H Lewin) was Radio/Navigator to F/Lt Jowling in
Beau VI (G for George).V8847, in the period 11/9/43 - 10/1/44.
On 10/1/44, paired with F/O Maxwell and F/O Brebner in Beau ( F ) they
intercepted a formation of 9 torpedo carrying Ju88s,in the subsequent action the formation was dispersed, an 88 was shot down (Jowling). In the attack (G) was seen to be damaged and on fire and (F) reported it climbed away to 3000ft and exploded before anyone bailed out. I wonder if the Luftwaffe reports might have covered this action.
A fellow officer ( Mick Ryan ) wrote to me describing an action which took place in sept/oct 43 in which a formation of low flying 88s were intercepted by 4 Beaus ( 2 being flown by the U S A F) and 2 French Spits
at least 4 of the 88s were shot down. It was reported in 'Stars and Stripes' together with a photo of some of the crews involved including Tony. Again this ought to have some mention in the Luftwaffe reports.
Any further information on this Squadron's activities would be appreciated
