Re: 456 Squadron April 1945
Hi again ruxpin:
April 22/23 - 456 Squadron, NT332. F/O Walter H. McWhinney and F/O John Costigan. Time up 23.10, time down 04.45. Unidentified enemy aircraft claimed destroyed on the ground at Bad Aibling airfield. Attacked at 01.55 from 1,000 feet firing short bursts, strikes observed on an unidentified aircraft followed by an explosion. "Fighter Nights", an excellent account of 456 Squadron, says this was on the ground, however the Squadron ORB seems to say the e/a was claimed destroyed at a different airfield - the text is barely legible however it may be Hoya. Not sure why the discrepancy, perhaps Fighter Nights was going from the relevant Combat Report, not the ORB. Cheers, Mark |
