Smile Lancaster MkII picture

Hello gentlemen ,

As we will honour the loss of Lancaster LL643 and her crew next September , I'm looking for a nice shot of a Lanc II ( Hercules fitted ) seen in flight for our memorial plaque. Can't hardly find one myself ! No copyright please .
Any idea ?

Re: Lancaster MkII picture

LL643 EQ-Q was from 408 Sqn RCAF and went missing on 7/8th June 1944 on a mission to Acheres and according to Bomber Command Losses 1944 was lost without trace.

The crew are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. So have you found where they crashed by chance?

Incidentally I understand that in Canada that wartime photos in their National Archives are actually now in the public domain and not subject to copyright unlike the IWM in the UK, so it may be possible to get a suitable photo off them. In addition there was a 408 Sqn RCAF Association and I'm sure that they would gladly help if they are still going.

Lastly the same would apply if you where to contact the Canadian Air Attache in the Canadian Embassy in which ever country you are in.

Good luck

Re: Lancaster MkII picture

Thanks Larry ans Snautzer

Larry , yes the wreckage of a Lanc II was found , but nothing about the crew...the eight airmen were never buried and so are still reported as missing.. Have a look at these :

For the memorial plaque I was just looking for a nice shadow of a Lanc II.

Re: Lancaster MkII picture

Thanks for the link, zorglub.
There is a photo of DS707 about three quarters of the way down.
This is the first time I have actually seen someone exiting and had not realised that there is a blackout curtain through which the guy looks to be stumbling.
I had always thought that the Lancaster doorway was taller and narrower, rounded somewhat like modern airliner doors) and further away from the tailplane.

It looks to be much harder to exit in a hurry with flying suit and parachute and to avoid hitting the tail.... so, is that a "normal" Lanc door or not?
