Bf 110 ID

The attached photo shows what appears to be a Bf 110 F or G coded S9+IC although on a closer look it appears to be an R. Also the tail appears to show kill marks but the photo is not that crisp to really tell. So we have an ZG 1 Bf 110 coded either S9+IC or +RC. Any thoughts?

Re: Bf 110 ID

It is Bf110F, S9+IC, aircraft of Hptm. Gunter Tonne (one of his two a/c, second was S9+AC).

Caption say: SS-Sichert meine Me110 bei Uman.

This is probably aircraft, bellylanded on routine/transffer flight from Krakau to Eastern Front in may 1942, probably due engine failure.

In attach also second a/c of Tonne for that period - Bf110F S9+AC, with same victory bars, early summer 1942.

The third a/c of G.Tonne for summer 1942 was Bf110F S9+GC with simular victory bars.

This four letters - A, G, I, T were used most by Stab II./SKG210 and Stab II./ZG1 during 1941-42. Other letters, like C, were less used during this period.

Re: Bf 110 ID

Thanks so much for the addition information. Do you need a better scan?

Re: Bf 110 ID

I will send you a better scan. But, I'm not sure it is the same aircraft. Check the right side prop, one is bent the other is not, the field looks different and the spacing on the tactical code is different.

Chuck

Re: Bf 110 ID

Yes, it is two different +IC's.

1. Wings of wasp are different.
2. Spacing between I and C are different
3. Right prop blade are different (one is damaged while another is not).

Re: Bf 110 ID

Given the appearance of the spinner I would say it was an F. And certainly there are kill markings or what appear to be on the tail. Take a close look and there seems to be the outline of an R and not an I. Could there have been a +RC?

Re: Bf 110 ID

Chuckschmitt,

I think the R might be the Stammkennzeichen (factory codes) coming through. If an R it would be too close to the C.

regards
