Schmitt's of SG1 and SG77

Hi Guys

I have two Schmitt's who I suspect could very well be the same person. Could any body please tell me if they know of there forenames. I cannot fing either of then in loses! The ranks would be a natural progression for one person.

Details are:-

6th July 1943 3./SG 1 Lt Il-2 1450 hrs 30 metres altitude.
8th July 1943 3./SG 1 Lt Il-2 1000 hrs 20 metres altitude.

8th April 1944 4./SG 77 Oblt Pe-2 0805 hrs 3000 metres altitude.
18th April 1944 II./JG 77 Oblt Il-5 1930 hrs 800 metres altitude.
27th August 1944 II./JG 77 Oblt Il-2 1335 hrs 400 metres altitude.

Grateful for any assistance

Kind Regards

Johannes

Edit: Can it be, that "Schmitt" JG77 = Schmidt? or u mean SG inplace JG?

Your : 18th April 1944 II./JG 77 Oblt Il-5 1930 hrs 800 metres altitude - can it be u mean 18. Juli 1944, Olt. Stephan Schmitt, Stab II/Schlachtgeschwader 77, IL-5, 19:30, 40 12:800m?

Information : Norbert Schmitt was later Staffelkapitän 3./SG10 Ritterkreuz 28. Febr. 45
Stephan Schmitt was Staffelkapitän 5./SG77 Ritterkreuz 29. Okt. 44

Re: Schmitt's of SG1 and SG77

Johannes/LG

I believe the name of Lt. Norbert Schmitt as listed in the Tony Wood's list for the 6 Jul 43 claim, is wrong (another misread name from the handwritten files or porr microfilm image?). I have found no information of Norbert Schmitt ever serving in the original Schlachtgeschwader 1 (SchG1 to differentiate with the later Schlachtgeschwader 1 as SG1). During the reorganistion of the ground forces on 18 Oct 43, I/SchG1 became II/SG77 where Oblt Stephan Schmitt was Staffelkapitan 5/SG77 (MIA 7 Oct 44). Therefore, I believe these July 1943 claims should be for Lt. Stephan Schmitt which fits the unit name redesignation. Outside this, I have no proof that this is correct.

Regards,

Craig...

Re: Schmitt's of SG1 and SG77

Thanks Guys

Yes, the handwritting on the micro films is generally diabolical, and usually without forenames. No dis-respect to Tony Woods, but I do not believe he knows the individuals in each staffel, we have probably read the surname and come to the same conclusion about the name, but we acquire forenames from different sources.

Thanks again you have all been a great help, I have concluded that they are two different guys the latter being Stephan.

Kind Regards

Johannes
