Seeking photos of I./NJG 2 Ju88 Nightfighters during 1940

Hello,

As you all know, we're developing a massive profile project for the EOE Book series. We've nearly completed laying out the various Ju88 requirements for each of seven primary volumes during 1939-40. To finish this, I've now determined that I'm going to need photo & info reference packages for at least four Ju88s for Stab I, 1, 2 and 3./NJG2 for each of the two volumes for Sept., 1940, and the final quarter (Oct-Dec, 1940) of 1940 (eight profiles total). I have no Ju88 photos for this unit (code R4) in the EOE photo DB, as I've never put much emphasis on researching the NJG units for the second half of 1940. Can anyone propose and/or refer me to any candidates for the component units of I./NJG 2 for this period? There must be enough existing info from photos to accurately portray the markings of each of these a/c. The emphasis should be on a/c with known full a/c codes, W.Nr., and/or crews, and could includes ones that may have been lost or crash-landed. I'm not looking for anything that wouldn't represent an a/c that served with these units after 31 December 1940, although ones photographed a few weeks into 1941 remain possible candidates if they carried markings representative of the end-1940 period. I believe that these will all turn out to be either Ju88C-2 or C-4 variants.

I know that there are several excellent books (and experts) on the NJG units, and I'm particularly hoping that they can be of help. I'm no expert on this area, and I need to rely on others to help chose and document the info packages for these profiles.

Who can help?

Regards,

Hello,

I do have the Rökker book on I./NJG2, and the Meyer/Stipdonk Nightfighter unit book that includes a section on I./NJG2, but neither of them have any really useful Ju88 photos to use for profile packages for 1940 aircraft.

Hello Larry,

I will ask around among some Dutch colleagues but I am afraid that the pictures you are requiring already would have been published somewhere if they do still exist... But it is always worth a try!

All the best, Marcel / Venlo

Marcel,

Thanks for your efforts. I may already have them in one of my reference books, but just haven't found them yet. If you spot anything anywhere, please let me know. We're so backlogged in getting stuff into the photo DB that I often find that I had the answers all along, but just hadn't got the needed material yet assimilated. Do you know if Boiten's books contain any such photos?

Regards,

Hi Larry,
I believe it will be difficult to find photos fulfilling all the criteria you set up for making several profiles of Ju88s for this unit and time period but hopefully members can help. I link to one photo which unfortunately has no date but the livery and markings make it interesting nonetheless. It seems to have the standard 70/71 camouflage for a Zerstörer which has received a coat of black paint except on the upper side of wings, engines and centre fuselage why it could be an early aircraft of the unit taken over from its previous Zerstörer career but that is no guarantee for it being taken in 1940. Code R4+FL with the individual aircraft letter ‘F’ outlined in what can be white. The NJG emblem on the nose. WNr unknown. Source eBay July 2011.

Re: Seeking photos of I./NJG 2 Ju88 Nightfighters during 1940

Goran,

Great help. I don't know whether we can find material for photo packages for our artist that meets all of the criteria that I outlined either. Consider that a "perfect world" view, with what we end up going with as sometimes less than that. Thanks so much for passing this one on, and also giving your opinion about the markings and insignia, which would have been my next question. This will likely be a profile subject aircraft. If anyone knows where an original of this eBay photo can be obtained, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

If any of our night fighter experts on this board have further opinions on the time frame, camouflage colors, markings and insignia on this a/c, please make your views known. Would the coding on this a/c, R4+FL, be in medium gray?

What else is out there for I./NJG2 for late 1940 aircraft?

Regards,

Hello,

you know the book "Ferne Nachtjagd" from the former Oberstabsarzt Dr. med. Otto Möhlenbeck and Manfred Leihse ? Perhaps contains this book some interesting photos for you.

Hi Simon,
I've checked the Photobucket site with my Norton Antivirus as I've got the same alert but I have not found anything else than there shall be a virus in a perticular named file (I don't post the link here to avoid mistakes/problems) but found nothing indicated for my account, album folder or image. I've also scanned the whole drive the image was uploaded from without finding anything. Attaching it here though. See below.
