loss of Arados

Hi all,

On January 27th 1944, a formation of 3 Ju 52 floatplanes, accompanied by an equal number of Arado 196s, were sighted to the west of Mykonos. Four 603 Squadron Beaufighters attacked and in the fight all the Junkers were shot down, as well as two of the Arados.
These Arados of the 1. Staffel 126 were:
FF. Gfr. Horst Pfützner, Ar 196 A3 (D1+AH, W.Nr. 0154) 100% m. BO. Ltn.

Which was the third one? Any idea about the floatplanes? They belonged to the 3. Seetransportstaffel, one was,

FF. Uffz. Kurt Werner, Ju 52 (See) 3g5e (TE+DZ, bzw 8A+GL, W.Nr. 6987) 100%
abgeschossen (603 Sqn) 27.01.44 westlich Mykonos

Cool Re: loss of Arados

Hello Frans,

(v.) vermisst
(vw.) verwundet ,i think in english "wounded"
"verletzt" can be used only by accident (ingured, i hope it is right)

in the the mean-time, i found the third Arado, but not the crew
27.01.44 Ar 196 A3 (D1+FH, W.Nr. 0297) 5% von 4 Beaufighter 603 sqn. während eines Ju-52 Geleits westl. der Insel Mykonos; 3 Wasser-Ju 52 wurden abgeschossen (K.T.B. Seeko Attika S.490)

Re: loss of Arados

Hi Byron, the reason why there were no losses with Ar 196A-3 W.Nr. 0297 D1+FH is that the aircraft received only 5% damages in the combat with the Beaufighters and none of the two crewmembers were injured.
All three Arado-aircraft served with 1./S.A.Gr.126. Regarding the Ju 52-aircraft, the only info I have is that one aircraft served with Seetransportfliegerstaffel 1 and the other two with Seetransportfliegerstaffel 3. Both Staffeln was operating in the area at this time.

Re: loss of Arados

Hi Seaplanes,

Unfortunately, there are only very few sutisfying informations, at least to me, about these two units, Seetransportstaffel 1 and 3.
Is there any wardiary available?
And another question. Staffel 4./126 was temporary transfered from Greece to Constanza/Mamaia at 06.12.43. Is it known when exactly they returned back? It has to be bevor February or March 1944.

Re: loss of Arados

Thanks Remi,

in the history of "The Queens squadron 603" by John Yoxall (part II) the british pilots are reporting about 3 floatplanes Ju 52 .

4./126:
30.11.43: now operational after completing formation and work-up, Staffel ordered to transfer from Skaramanga to Constanta-Mamaia this date, with intermediate stop at Pola in Istria. (ULTRA)
04.12.43: above order changed - 2./125 to move to Constanta-Mamaia instead, and 4./126 to take its place at Suda Bay. It remained at Suda Bay until it departed for Travemünde in North Germany on 11 September 1944. (ULTRA; Kurowski:267)

Re: loss of Arados

Hello Larry,

So, 4./126 never left Crete, the order was recalled. But i have some doubts about the leaving of the whole 2./125.
According to the war diary of this unit, they arrived in Athens at 08.01.42 and then between 21.02.42 and 10.04.42 they were transfered gradually to Crete.
At the 12th of May 1942, 3 Arados 196 were ordered to the black Sea (8. Seenotstaffel Constanza) to fight Submarines.
04.10.43 in Suda 4./126 came from 2./125 to existance.
Apparently only a part of 2./125 was ordered to move to Constanza-Mamaia.
Some losses are known (7R+HK, 7R+AK, 7R+FK, 7R+BK, 7R+IK).

my best regards
Byron
