Hello Jim,
Well, many years ago the Oberbürgemeister of Vienna wrote to a Dutch airwar historian that it was impossible that an Austrian Luftwaffe pilot could have been missed over the Netherlands because 'Austria was never at war' (!). The Dutch remember it a bit differently: the chief Nazi administrator of the Netherlands was Arthus Seyss-Inquart, leader of the Austrian Nazi's before the war and hanged after the Nuremberg trials for crimes against humanity. It would not surprise me at all if someone flew a He219 in Austria after VE-Day until an American or Russian GI told the surprised pilot that the war really was over since a week or two...
