Aboriginals in RAAF WW2

Hi guys

I've read that there were four Aboriginies in the RAAF during WW2, but I'm not sure if all four were aircrew. Can anyone advise, please.

I know of two, Len Waters was the only Aboriginal pilot, and Arnold Lockyer a WOP/AG executed POW in 1945 (I'm after a photo of Lockyer).

I'm sure one of our experts will have the answer!

Cheers
Brian

Hi Brian,

Couldn't find a pic of Arnold Lockyer, but did find he has an entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography:

Also, his service file has been digitised and can be viewed online.

Re: Aboriginals in RAAF WW2

I've found a third, LAC Alex Taylor (140782). He served at Darwin as a flight rigger with 7 Repair & Servicing Unit, and also 20 Squadron, servicing Catalinas.

Re: Aboriginals in RAAF WW2

Thanks Bruce & Col

I believe I have now established that there were only two aircrew - Len Waters and Arnold Lockyer - but thanks for the identities of the others.

I'm still searching for a picture of Lockyer - there must be one somewhere!

Cheers
Brian

Tried his grandson, Brian? I'm sure ABC can put you in contact.
