French airfield to identify
Hi all,
Attached is a combination picture of the caption on the back of 3 different pictures. It's the name of a french airfield. Can anyone make out the name of this airfield? Thanks in advance, Rudi. Last edited by RudiS; 23rd April 2016 at 17:04. |

Re: French airfield to identify
Assuming the first two letters are "He" and the last part is ""la", "le" or "lo" followed by "Ceg", it does not match anything on any list I have, including the A.I.2.(b) list of 1,426 French airfields along with their alternate names issued in mid-1943.

Re: French airfield to identify
Thanks for helping out, Larry. Much appreciated.
I think the last two words could be "le-Grand". The pictures were taken in may/june 1940 and show derelict french aircraft. Regards, Rudi. |

Re: French airfield to identify
I get 3 "hits", Rudi:
Essigny-le-Grand (FR) (49 44 N – 03 13 E) Mourmelon-le-Grand (FR) (49 08 N – 04 21 E) Port-le-Grand (FR) (50 09 N – 01 44 E) They were all alternate names for landing grounds or airfields. Do any of them look like they might fit? L. |

Re: French airfield to identify
Hello
Phonetically, both in German as in French, the only matching one is Essigny le Grand. Regards J Schreiber |

Re: French airfield to identify
It's clear that the german soldier who wrote the captions on the pictures mixed up some names. So we'll probably never know what he was meaning.
Thanks everyone for trying to solve this mystery. Very much appreciated. Regards, Rudi. |
