Re: luftwaffe losses, Arnheim 9/28/1944

I.JG 77 and I./JG 11 were losses in the "Arnhem area". If you could be more specific (time, type, claim of who) we might be able to tell more.

Re: luftwaffe losses, Arnheim 9/28/1944

Just to add a few more details;

Bf 109G-14, werknummer 413900, red 7, 2./JG 77
Lt. Hans-Dieter Student, born 28.04.1924 (KIA).
Crashed near Brünen/Wesel.

Bf 109G-14, werknummer 461445, yellow 13, 3./JG 77
Lt. Wulf Focke, born 19.04.1921 (KIA).
Crashed near Wesel.

Bf 109G-14, werknummer 460383, yellow 9, 3./JG 77
Lt. Hellmuth Klinker, born 12.06.1923 (KIA).
Crashed near Bergen/Heijen.

There might have been more losses where the pilot escaped unhurt.

Unfortunately not much is known about the mission. Lt. Focke was an experienced pilot with 13 Victories and Lt. Klinker had 3 victories. There was a one hour time difference between UK and German time. I. Gruppe JG 77 reported combat with P-47 around 18.00 hrs. One P-47 was claimed shot down by Oblt. Bruno Kolthoff who himself was killed 8 days later in the same area.

Cheers,

John.

Ps. Don't know who the Fw 190 claim was. The loss of I./JG 11 was probably in the morning.

Thanks very much! My dad had his canopy blown out on the first pass & went into a flat spin,he being knocked unconcious & not recovering until below 1,000 ft. His plane may very well have been claimed as a kill by the German pilot.
