Hello Mark,
Thank you for the interesting reply. I have just seen a copy of the recommendation for the VC to S/L Sherwood of 97 Squadron. This has a much clearer signature and appears to be that of Group Captain H. A. Haines. However the initial 'a' appears to be either in lowercase – or a capita 'G' – I am not sure! In the book 'The Augsburg Raid' by Jack Currie DFC states: 'The recommendations were sent to Grantham for endorsement. There, Group Captain Haines, acting for AOC 5 Group, wrote 'Recommended' under each report . .' Will take your advice regarding further research. Kind regards, Malcolm.
