Re: Ofhr Alexander Ottnand 8./JG27 1943

Hi Brian

Don't know much about this guy, only his claims really and that he was injured when he crashed his Bf109 at Crailsheim. Also may have received the Deutsches Kreuz in gold, a date of 1st January 1945 has been suggested, but could be anytime from June 1944 onwards, and Summer 1944 is more likely. His first four claims below were as an Ofhr, the rest as a Lt......all with 8./JG 27:-

28th October 1943 Maryland South of Chalkis Island 1434 hrs 200 metres Nr.1
5th November 1943 Beauufighter South of Gaddurra 0828 hrs 20 metres Nr.2
14th November 1943 Beaufighter NE Gaidaros Island 1336 hrs Nr.3
16th November 1943 Beaufighter South of Tria Nisia Island 1248 hrs 20 metres Nr.4
19th March 1944 B-24 SSW Marburg 1410 hrs 6000 metres Nr.5
2nd April 1944 B-24 30km SW Graz 1035 hrs 5000 metres Nr.6
12th April 1944 B-24 SE Wiener Neustadt u/c
12th April 1944 B-24 SE Wiener Neustadt 1205 hrs u/c
23rd April 1944 P-51 SW Lake Neusiedler 1438 hrs 1500 metres Nr.7
12th May 1944 B-17 30km NE Frankfurt-am-Main 1240 hrs 6500 metres Nr.8
24th May 1944 B-24 55km North of Bruck-am-der-Mur 1015 hrs 6000 metres Nr.9
24th May 1944 B-24 60km NE Bruck-am-der-Mur 1020 hrs 6000 metres Nr.10
28th May 1944 B-17 SW Zerbst 1425 hrs 7500 metres v.n.e-a.s.m Nr.11
30th May 1944 B-24 30km West of Banja Luka 1130 hrs 5000 metres Nr.12

Sorry, I have no date of Birth or Death for him, but assume he survived the war.

Kind Regards

Johannes

Re: Ofhr Alexander Ottnand 8./JG27 1943

Brian, Chris and Johannes,

Did you manage to identify the Maryland claimed by this pilot? Was it from 69 Squadron or other Reconaissance unit, or from a South African Air Force Squadron? Since I do have a great interest on reconaissance squadrons, if his claim was indeed against such a machine, could you share the identity of crew, etc...(if available)?
Thanks indeed...
Yours,
Adriano S. Baumgartner
